How tó organize and fight in the car industry. A look back with a film and
discussion with the workers activist Wolfgang Schaumberg
15 years have passed since the Opel-workers in Bochum stopped the production in 2004 in a Wildcat Strike: After six days their strong arms had hit the world market production hard, several plants of the parent company GM stood still.
The GoG has been an active
group since 1972 as part of the workforce at the Opel plant in Bochum for
decades. They were from IG Metall (Union) and kept active in favour of the
workers, using the possibilities auf the German Labour law as well as several
wild strikes, for the persistent struggle for daily reductions in working
hours, the attempt to establish a link between the GM workforces in Europe and
finally against the closure of the company, the colleagues have left no stone
unturned in order to wrest concessions from the company and fight the
capitalist normal operation at Opel.
In order to make these experiences accessible, the GoG colleagues commissioned
labournet.tv to make a film about the history of the GoG and the Bochum Opel
workforce. Wolgang Schaumberg has been Opel worker an still regularly meets
with his GoG collegues.
Wolgang Schaumberg: Former Opel Worker, GoG member, founding member and part of the association’s board of Forum Arbeitswelten.
Karsten Weber: Industrial electrician, film maker, member of Forum Arbeitswelten, with a political focus on precarious work.
